In 2004, Stamey released the album Travels in the South, quickly followed by . 2004, enlarged as 2005's A Question of Temperature featuring the group Yo La Tengo as the album's backing musicians In 2012, Stamey reunited with the dB's to complete Falling Off the Sky, their first new studio album in 25 years and their first in 30 years with the original 1978 line-up

A Question Of Temperature - Fairly Good, Based on 1 Critics. 70. After devoting most of his time to his career as a producer through much of the 1990s, Chris Stamey seems to be recording his own work in what could be charitably called fits and starts; in the summer of 2004 he released his first album in nearly ten years, Travels in the South, but eight months later the man returned to record.

Shorthand, Stamey claims, for Very Obvious Total Emergency), it was released in a very limited run in October 2004 during the get-out-the-vote drive. This new version consists of the same recordings, with a new intro track (the voting PSA that lead off the original . is converted into a bonus track at the tail end of the album, no longer urgently relevant but still charming), and an amusing a-driven instrumental called "Dr. Strangelove's Assistant". A Question of Temperature ultimately comes out a very solid if not revelatory record. The covers are well-chosen, the steps back into Stamey's old songbook are enjoyable, and the band are loose and obviously enjoying themselves.

The blast of reverb laden feedback that starts off Chris Stamey's A Question of Temperature is, as much as anything on the album, an announcement that he's back in the saddle. After a 10-year recording hiatus during which he produced such notable bands as Whiskeytown and Le Tigre, Stamey has suddenly turned prolific. A Question of Temperature follows 2004's Travels in the South, leaving less than a year between the two albums  . Shapes of Things", the second song on the album, updates the Yardbirds' original with Stamey and company staying close to the bluesy guitar work of the original.
