Pictures at an Exhibition is a live album by the English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in November 1971 on Island Records. It is a recording of the band's arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, performed at Newcastle City Hall on 26 March 1971. Emerson wished to arrange the piece after seeing an orchestral performance of it several years before. He bought a copy of the score, and pitched the idea to Lake and Palmer, who agreed to adapt it.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer's self-titled debut album was released in November 1970. They planned to record "Pictures At An Exhibition" for their next album, but decided instead to make a piece called "Tarkus" the centerpiece and title track. On March 26, 1971 at stop on their UK tour at Newcastle City Hall in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, the group performed "Pictures At An Exhibition" and released the recording as their first live album (third overall)

The early-'70s live sound is a little crude by today's standards, but the tightness of the playing (Carl Palmer is especially good) makes up for any sonic inadequacies. Keith Emerson is the dominant musical personality here, but Greg Lake and Palmer get the spotlight enough to prevent it from being a pure keyboard showcase.

Of the first five ELP albums, this one is the weakest, in my opinion. The fact that the band did not head into the studio, but recorded the album live gave me the impression that the band did not put the same level of care and attention to its recording and production. While this album is lauded for bringing classical music to the masses, I personally miss the band's well crafted songwriting. I prefer the studio versions of this album on the "In the Hot Seat" CD. Although Greg Lake's voice had suffered by the time the band recorded that CD in the nineties, the cleaner instrumentation and the fact it boils "Pictures" to its highlights will suit some tastes better.

Hadn't played my original vinyl copy of this for more years than I care to remember, so I thought I'd give it a go after a system upgrade. What a great album and the sound quality isn't half bad either especially the bass notes from Emersons church organ and Moog. Frenetic drumming by the awesome Carl Palmer and also I had quite forgotten what a great voice and guitarist Greg Lake is. Only let down for me was the final track on the LP Nutrocker which is a bit twee and really doesn't gel with the rest of the album. I will certainly be playing this album a lot more often.

another excellent lp from ELP. this is the 3rd lp in their classic 5 lp canon. the 2011 remaster adds 5 bonus tracks from 1993.
