The centerpiece of the album is the Four Legends from the Kalevala, also known as the Lemminkäinen Suite. First composed in 1895-6, this proto-symphony stands alongside Karelia and En Saga as one of the composer's earliest "canonical" works. Like En Saga, the Legends were subsequently revised, and the version recorded here reflects Sibelius' final 1939 emendations.

Album · 1991 · 6 Songs. Sibelius: The Complete Symphonies - Karelia - Lemminkäinen - Violin Concerto. Osmo Vänskä & Lahti Symphony Orchestra. Brahms: The 4 Symphonies. Berlin Philharmonic & Herbert von Karajan.

Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra have carved out a space as world-renowned Sibelius interpreters, particularly with regards to the composer's lesser known and neglected works. The present album, Seriously Sibelius, continues that tradition with a diverse programme including several world premieres. Bookended by two versions of the In memoriam, Op. 59, the works collected here are often sombre, but are lightened by dashes of gaiety provided by the spinning waltzes of 3 Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 96. 4. kHz, 24-bit PCM – BIS Studio Masters.
