Artie Shaw (born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky; May 23, 1910 – December 30, 2004) was an American clarinetist, composer, bandleader, and actor. Also an author, Shaw wrote both fiction and non-fiction. Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists", Shaw led one of the United States' most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. Though he had numerous hit records, he was perhaps best known for his 1938 recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine".
Listen to albums and songs from Artie Shaw. Artie Shaw is easily one of the finest jazz clarinetists of all time, with a smooth and swinging style all his own. Shaw had great success beginning in the late 30's and continuing into the 40's, when he was a major star respected by teenagers and jazz fans alike. Shaw always hired the best musicians - Buddy Rich, Billy Butterfield and Zoot Sims, for example - and even led one of the finest mainstream Bop bands around during the mid-50s. Then at the peak of creativity Shaw stopped making music, greatly saddening Benny Goodman, his equally hotheaded clarinet rival.
The Essential Artie Shaw collects 38 tracks recorded between 1938 and 1953 for Bluebird. The compilation does an admiral job of showcasing Shaw's skills as bandleader, composer, showman, and musician. Along with the abundance of swing standards from the era like "Nightmare," "Frenesi," and "Begin the Beguine," the combination of big band and strings allows for colorful and intricate arrangements on "April in Paris," "Any Old Time," "All the Things You Are," and the Shaw-penned "Concerto for Clarinet (Pts. 1-2)," finding the unique composer on par with Stan Kenton. Collectors should take note of the previously unissued 1936 take of "Streamline. Track Listing - Disc 1.
