Herbert von Karajan (German: (listen); born Heribert Ritter von Karajan; 5 April 1908 – 16 July 1989) was an Austrian conductor. He was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years. Generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, he was a dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death. Part of the reason for this was the large number of recordings he made and their prominence during his lifetime

Herbert von Karajan’s first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation – and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. After successful completion of the tour, Karajan was appointed principal conductor in 1956

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the late Austrian conductor's birth, EMI released this eight-CD set called Herbert von Karajan The Great Recordings. Some listeners might object that Karajan didn't do his best work for EMI, but rather for Deutsche Grammophon, a defendable position in light of the fact that the majority of his recordings were made for the German label. But even listeners who defended the primacy of Karajan's work for the English label might say the performances included here don't represent his best work for them. Sehr feierlich und sehr langsam.
