Valery Gergiev's absorbing traversal of Pictures at an Exhibition stresses composer Mussorgsky's elemental sensibility over Ravel's urbane orchestration. The conductor achieves this by encouraging the Vienna Philharmonic brass to play up their characteristically broad sonority, especially from the elemental choralelike writing in Catacombae until the concluding Great Gate at Kiev's shattering climax. Gopak (Hopak), for orchestra, transcribed by Liadov from the opera Sorochintsï Fair. They include Three Movements from Petrouchka, Pictures at an Exhibition, and Dumka, respectively. Performing these difficult works is Yefim Bronfman, a Soviet-born (Uzbekistan, 1958) Israeli-American pianist who studied with such renown teachers as Rudolf Firkusny, Leon Fleisher, and Rudolf Serkin. So, he certainly has the credentials.
