Moore’s four original songs, especially the closers Lay Down Your Lonesome Burden and Set Things Aright, fit in well among the traditional selections, which is a testament to his songwriting skill. In the Cool of the Day is a charmingly understated return to Moore’s roots. In the Cool of the Day Daniel Martin Moore. In the Cool of the Day is Daniel Martin Moore’s heartfelt homage to the old-time Appalachian spirituals that he grew up listening to in Kentucky. Featuring spare arrangements and a light folk-gospel feel, the tone of the album is that of a subdued celebration of faith. He’s joined by many talented guests, among them Jim James of My Morning Jacket and cellist Ben Sollee, on banjo, guitar, mandolin, upright bass, fiddle, piano, and drums, yet the focus throughout is on Moore’s warm and soothing voice.

Listening to Daniel Martin Moore’s latest release is a little like being given an ill-fitting jumper by a relative who usually nails your gift. You’re left confused, a little angry and wondering what has happened to their previously faultless judgement.

Listening to Daniel Martin Moore’s In The Cool Of The Day is, in a nutshell, quite a simple task. Whispering piano parts, vocals as smooth as butter, and a bright rhythm section make for an easy listen. Everything about this album is a staple for minimalism (although almost to a fault), from the orchestration to the concepts in the lyrics. Yet In The Cool Of The Day is unique to it’s genre for it’s ability to connect on a spiritual level, offering a delightful (even effortless) take on life and Christ. It’s not radical by any means, but collectively the record leaves one with the feeling of being home and at peace. For fans of Iron and Wine and The Swell Season; you’ll be pleased with In The Cool Of The Day.
