Sings the Blues is an album by riter Nina Simone. This was Simone's first album for RCA Records after previously recording for Colpix Records and Philips Records. The album was also reissued in 2006 with bonus tracks, and re-packaged in 1991 by RCA/Novus as a 17-track compilation under the title The Blues. My Man's Gone Now", from the opera Porgy & Bess by George Gershwin.

Nina Jo Smith is a natural-born Indie Grrl (born on the 4th of July). She accompanies her sweet voice and wry, wise lyrics with clean, inventive fingerpicking on 6- and 12-string guitars. Recently she's also begun exploring the Temple (aka Tipple) guitar, thanks to Wayne Perkins, who described its use by some great Muscle Shoals studio cats. I like a song that can travel seamlessly from sublime to ridiculous and back again. And I believe in melody. If it has a serious message, it's delivered with humor & if it's funny, it has a cosmic bent

She left the US in the 1970s, moving first to Barbados, and some other places, including Africa and the Netherlands, before eventually settling in France where she died from cancer in 2003. Nina's voice drew heavily on other music forms. It was infused with gospel, blues, soul, jazz, R&B, and folk.

She mentions several important names and places, but in such a way that you'll never get confused with the whole new jargon. Now I'm craving for more details. Finally, the soundtrack is wonderful. Hanshaw's delivery is on point with every important event. I've seen few videos to encourage that more than 'Sita Sings the Blues'. In the video, Nina tells the story (presumably her own) of Nina and Dave, two happily married graphic artists. He suddenly (and unilaterally, without discussion) decides to take a job in India, and eventually dumps her without ever telling her why. By the end of the video, we see Nina in possession of a small library of Hindu literature, reading the Ramayana.
