This performance of Das Lied von der Erde compliments the famed parallel 1952 studio session with these same forces. Kathleen Ferrier, a true contralto and Walter protege, and Julius Patzak, a born-and-bred Viennese tenor, are near-ideal soloists. The once-renowned, versatile Austrian soprano Hilde Güden sings the final movement of Mahler's beloved 4th Symphony. A Mahler protege, Bruno Walter's recordings of his, and Mozart's, works remain unequaled. Conductor: Bruno Walter. The Mahler song cycle was part of a four-CD set devoted to Walter's Mahler; it also featured the Mahler Fourth, but instead of the Mozart Symphony it included the three Mahler Lieder also sung by Güden on the same concert, whereas the DG single-disc release (as here) included the Mozart Symphony but omitted the songs.

Tell us if something is incorrect. Back at home in the Netherlands, there followed in 1952 the Fourth Symphony, Mahler's most Classically formed work and therefore one well suited to Van Beinum's musical temperament. Four years later Van Beinum set down Das Lied von der Erde, another outlier in the composer's output to the extent that the music rewards virtues of reserve and restraint more than traditionally.

Symphony No. 9 by Gustav Mahler was written between 1908 and 1909, and was the last symphony that he completed. It is actually his tenth symphonic work, as Mahler gave no ordinal number to his symphonic song-cycle Das Lied von der Erde. A typical performance takes about 75 to 90 minutes. Though the work is often described as being in the key of D major, the tonal scheme of the symphony as a whole is progressive. While the opening movement is in D major, the finale is in D♭ major. 2 by Gustav Mahler, known as the Resurrection Symphony, was written between 1888 and 1894, and first performed in 1895. This symphony was one of Mahler's most popular and successful works during his lifetime. It was his first major work that established his lifelong view of the beauty of afterlife and resurrection. return of the doubts of the third movement and the questions of the first – ends with a fervent hope for everlasting, transcendent renewal, a theme that Mahler would ultimately transfigure into the music of Das Lied von der Erde. As generally happened, Mahler later withdrew all versions of the programme from circulation.
