Compay and Hierrezuelo had a falling out around 1955, and in 1957 Segundo formed his own band, Compay Segundo y sus Muchachos. After Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, however, life in Cuba changed drastically, and the country became an international pariah that had little contact with the rest of the world.
