Woody Herman Shaw Jr. (December 24, 1944 – May 10, 1989) was an American trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer and band leader. Born with a photographic memory and perfect pitch he was an innovative musician who respected his predecessors and was himself respected by a wide variety of jazz musicians, many of whom played and recorded with him. Woody Shaw was born on December 24, 1944 in Laurinburg, North Carolina.

Shaw is in fiery and explorative form throughout the challenging material, reminding listeners what a major improviser he was, and what a major loss it was when he died prematurely.

While Woody Shaw remains among the most underrated of Jazz giants, the Live CDs released by High Note Records have done a great service in showcasing the tempestuous daring and lyrical genius of the Jersey-raised trumpet master. From the early 1960s alongside Eric Dolphy and Larry Young, through his own crusading recordings through the 1970s to his death in the late 1980s, Shaw placed his singular brand of compositional finesse and group dynamics upon the world of Music. Woody Shaw was fabulous trumpet player. He was a great soloist and leader. He is greatly missed. 6 people found this helpful.
