The contents are accurately described as British string quartets, and in fact they're all British string quartets of the 1990s, by composers with a greater or lesser degree of academic background. The audience interested in such a thing may find this a stimulating program. These two pieces frame the entirely different String Quartet of Judith Weir, a sort of distillation of Britten's tonality down to minimal gestures. The Kreutzer Quartet is obviously comfortable with the repertory, and the engineering is a notch above what is often heard in discs from the university milieu.
Primary Artist, String Quartet.
String Quartet – III – Presto (2:45). Robert Saxton: I. Songs, Dances and Ellipses – I – Gently flowing, singing (5:06). Casken’s quartet certainly adds up to an impressive whole, as does, in a very different way, Judith Weir’s. It has taken a long time for this release to reach the market, but it was worth the wait. John Casken’s quartet stands out on an excellent dis. ouch and timbre beautifully captured by the Kreutzer Quartet.
