Only now did he feel ready to set it to music. Example 2 Paul Ben-Haim, The Joram Oratorio, Vorspiel (Bar 1) Example 3 Ernest Bloch, The Sacred Service, First Movement (Bars 1-3) Example 4 The Psalmody Motif52 Bloch was very much aware of the Gregorian origins of his motif; he believed, however, that the origins of the Gregorian chants themselves lay in whatever seeds survive of the songs of the.

Joram was begun when his name was still Paul Frankenburger, after being ousted from his post as Director of Augsburg Opera, in 1931 by a Nazi official; completed in the year Hitler gained power, it was never performed, though a partial premiere took place in the mid-1970s. The work is a setting of The Book of Joram by the German poet Rudolf Borchardt (1877-1945), a dense philosophical text in a quasi-Biblical idiom which develops the Job story as a contemporary allegory, and which unites Christian and Jewish ideologies, Borchardt himself being from a Protestant family of Jewish ancestry.
