Merlin’s Isle Of Gramarye by Peter Bellamy. Deep folk from the South Downs. Record Collector is the world's leading authority on rare and collectable records. A companion release to Talking Elephant’s recent reissue of Bellamy’s 1970 Oak, Ash And Thorn, like its predecessor, this 1972 album is also based on Rudyard Kipling’s song books. Puck Of Puck’s Hill and Rewards And Fairies both took a broad, 3,000-year overview of Sussex song, offering bold and imaginative guesswork as to how Saxon or Viking songs may have sounded. Bellamy largely follows Kipling’s guide, as on Song Of The Red War Boat and Harp Song Of The Dane Woman.
Peter Bellamy's first solo album "Mainly Norfolk" (1968) indicated his desire to promote the folk music of his part of England. It drew heavily on the repertoire of Harry Cox, still alive at that time, who was the most famous traditional singer of Norfolk songs. On the album, Bellamy sang all songs unaccompanied. Beginning on his second album, "Fair England's Shore" (1968), he began to accompany himself on the Anglo concertina. Still later, he occasionally recorded with guitar .
