Helo
"JIM DANDY"JAMES TAYLOR-COVERS: Hardly a stranger to tackling other people's work, JAMES TAYLOR's easy listening renditions of the sixties chestnuts HOW SWEET IT IS, MOCKINGBIRD and HANDY MAN fared as well as originals like FIRE & RAIN and MEXICO during his hit making hey day. On COVERS, whether channeling Motown (JUNIOR WALKER's ROAD RUNNER, THE TEMPTATIONS' IT'S GROWING), country (GEORGE JONES' early twanger WHY BABY WHY), or jukebox rock (NOT FADE AWAY and SUMMERTIME BLUES), he applies the same appealing "vanilla cool" to everything, in a folksy voice that hasn't changed in decades. HOUND DOG resembles neither BIG MAMA THORNTON's bloozey brouhaha nor ELVIS' scorching version, but TAYLOR's low-key, funky take works well in this context. This 2007 effort appeared during a thirteen year stretch that yielded no new material, but that doesn't mean it's not chock full of easy to digest stuff. While nothing supersedes the originals, COVERS is a solid listening experience for JT fans...you know who you are and you know what to expect from this most reliable of seventies troubadours.RATING: FOUR RETREADS
