Mumford & Sons have revealed details of their new album Delta, which will be released on 16 November through Gentlemen of the Road/Island Records. It was recorded at The Church Studios in London, and produced by Paul Epworth. Since the release of Wilder Mind in May 2015, and the collaborative Johannesburg mini-album in the Summer of 2016, Mumford & Sons have found a rich, prolific vein of form in the writing for Delta. Where Wilder Mind harnessed a widescreen electric sound that seemed custom built to be belted back to them from the festival main stages, Delta loses none of that sense of scale, but couples it with an intimacy that has so successfully combined to make Mumford & Sons one of the biggest bands of recent years. Delta is a record of differing shades, colours and textures.
Dave Berry of XFM named "Little Lion Man" his record of the week, and in another interview with the band, Berry said "Screw 'of the week', it's my favourite track of the year . In December 2010, Mumford & Sons earned Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rock Song ("Little Lion Man"). While they did not go on to win an award, the band performed their single "The Cave" at the Grammy ceremony. The performance earned positive media attention and boosted visibility for Sigh No More-US sales increased by 99% in the period following the ceremony in February 2011. The album subsequently peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart and the Billboard 200 in the U. .
Mumford & Sons’ new album Delta features some admirable sonic experimentation, but often gets hammy and doesn’t live up to the promise of its best arrangements. Singer-songwriter Marcus Mumford wrote lyrics about love and crises of faith that resided on the dividing line between profundity and silliness and sang them in a brooding, mewling delivery not unlike Dave Matthews’s signature growl. The tunes were functional if perfunctory. Babel won the Grammy for Album of the Year at the 2013 ceremony in one of the most shocking choices in that category since Steely Dan’s comeback album beat out Radiohead’s Kid A for top honors in 2001. Album No. 3, 2015’s Wilder Mind, ditched the traditional building blocks of a Mumford song. Working with Aaron Dessner of the National, the band came up with a propulsive, synth-based sound. The thinking was solid.
Delta, Mumford & Sons’ fourth full-length studio album, marks the third leader for group, following their last two studio sets: Wilder Mind (2015) and Babel (2012). Wilder Mind launched with 249,000 units (231,000 in album sales), while Babel bowed with 600,000 in album sales (before the album transitioned to a units-ranked tally in late 2014). Delta’s debut of 230,000 equivalent album units is the largest week for an alternative album in 2018, and the second-biggest for any rock album. Among all rock titles, only Dave Matthews Band’s Come Tomorrow collected a bigger week, when it debuted at No. 1 (June 23-dated chart) with 292,000 units. It’s the eighth top 10 hit for the act, and the band’s fifth song to reach the top five. At No. 2 on the Billboard 200, Michel Bublé collects his eighth top 10 album, as Love (on Reprise/Warner Bros. Records) starts with 111,000 units (105,000 in album sales).
