Biography by William Ruhlmann. A rock & roll true believer with a poet's heart, the Boss defined mainstream American rock in the late 20th century.

His mother, whose parents were immigrants from Naples and Sorrento, taught him other lessons: Truthfulness, consistency, professionalism, kindness, compassion, manners, thoughtfulness, pride in yourself, honour, love, faith in and fidelity to your family, commitment, joy in your work and a never-say-die thirst for life. In a book that bears the hallmarks of having been written by his own hand, Springsteen is particularly good at capturing the exhilaration of his rise to success with the E Street Band, formed as a benevolent dictatorship in 1972 after he had grown weary of playing in co-operative groups. Democracy in rock bands, with very few exceptions, is often a ticking time-bomb, he writes.

Bruce Springsteen had two choices in 1975: shit or bust. It’s ironic then, that the cover shot for its sleeve was spontaneous. The story goes that New York photographer Eric Meola had been booked by Springsteen’s manager Mike Appel, but the singer’s long hours in the studio across.

Bruce Springsteen’s song lyrics have injected more drama and mystery into the myths of the American road than any figure since Jack Kerouac. He knows this, of course. So it’s one of the running jokes in his big, loose, rangy and intensely satisfying new memoir, Born to Run (what else was he going to call it?), that he didn’t begin to drive until he was well into his 20s - around the time he landed simultaneously on the covers of Time and Newsweek.

On February 8th, 2013, Bruce Springsteen was honored as the 2013 MusiCares Person Of The Year. MusiCares was established in 1989 by the Recording Academy to provide a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need, through innovative programs and services.

You’re lucky enough to see Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band play Jungleland in person, while Danny Federici and Clarence Clemons are still alive, no less. They form the crux of the song’s theme - the sacred organ and the grimy sax coming together to show that the holy can be guttural and vice versa
