Purcell - Divine Hymns Harmonia Sacra Les Arts Florissants, Christie. The texts of these 16 "Divine Hymns" by English composers of the 17th C are chiefly lamentations and pleas for mercy. The sense of sinful unworthiness is overwhelming

Performed by Les Arts Florissants under the direction of William Christie, the works here express a huge emotional range, and the singers - tenor Paul Agnew and soprano Claire Debono, especially - are outstanding. Agnew's "Lord, what is man" and Debono's "Tell me, some pitying angel" are particular highlights. Led from either the harpsichord or the organ by Christie and augmented by Elizabeth Kenny on the theorbo and Anne-Marie Lasla on viola da gamba, these performances should appeal to fans of the English Baroque.

Les Arts Florissants also organize numerous events aimed at building new audiences. In 2012, William Christie and Les Arts Florissants created the festival Dans les Jardins de William Christie, in partnership with the Conseil départemental de la Vendée

Since God so tender a regard. A Hymne to God the Father, 'Wilt thou forgive that sin'. Peaceful is he and most secure.
