JR Robinson has been writing and recording music as Wrekmeister Harmonies in various incarnations since 2006. You’ve Always Meant So Much To Me was written to accompany a film Robinson shot in decimated Detroit locations, the desert of Joshua Tree and decaying forests of Tasmania

Who will lay claim to You’ve Always Meant So Much to Me, the second proper album from Chicago sound art project Wrekmeister Harmonies ? During its sole, 38-minute track, the dozen-member ensemble led by . Robinson builds from asymptotic silence into space-age electroacoustic drone, and from browbeating doom metal into, ultimately, a circular, harp-flecked denouement. Within Robinson’s magnetic musical current, the distance from beer-soaked rock club to incense-scented yoga studio is but one quick fadeout.

The new album by Wrekmeister Harmonies is a brilliant, one track affair showcasing drone at its best. Louder Than Wars Paul Scott-Bates gave it a listen. This is an interesting beast if ever I heard one, proving unequivocally that ‘everything deserves at least one listen’. It would be tempting, if you’re not a fan of the drone genre, to stop listening to You’ve Always Meant So Much To Me after nine or ten minutes but with patience & given slightly a chance this grows into something rather wonderful

Under the pseudonym of Wrekmeister Harmonies, this music is the creation of JR Robinson and his collaboration with notable guests such as Bruce Lamont, Jef Whitehead, and Sanford Parker to name a few, all exploring different aural vistas in the shape of one 38 minute movement. Originally this collective gathered in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago to perform this meandering and avant-garde piece to a sold out crowd. Initially opening with whirring ambient noise and an altogether spectral vibe, ‘You’ve Always Meant So Much To Me’ gently meanders through calm hills of atmospherics for the first 15 minutes or so when serenely plucked guitars pervade and this movement begins to unfurl. Lonesome strings join the guitars and the bed of noise begins augmenting, making its presence felt even stronger.

And new 12-inch release You’ve Always Meant So Much To Me, while certainly powerful in its own way, has an ambient approach that makes it less of a curious match on a roster filled with post-rock, punk and electronic names. You’ve Always Meant So Much To Me is just a single 38-minute track, which unfolds slowly and builds from a faint hum on up to something even more haunting and dense. There are layers of emotion within You’ve Always Meant So Much to Me, which are powerful beyond easy definition or recognition. Musically, as well, it’s music that’s hard to pin down - it belongs, in part, in the world of metal, yet it doesn’t fully commit to it in any concrete way.
