Benny Green on Gene Harris. The Three Sounds were jazzy yet soulful, never really straying too far from the blues, even on up tempo things. And their ballad work was simply beautiful-the trio setting really brought out the bluesy melodies of each song. The band was Gene Harris-piano, Andy Simpkins-double bass, and (depending on the tune) either Bill Dowdy, Carl Burnett, or Kalil Mali-drums. BN gave them a memorable number of 1600, the very last number of 1500 series, for their debut album Introducing. Richard Havers wrote about them on his Uncompromising Expression that Alfred Lion signed them up to be much like Oscar Peterson was for Norman Granz and Verve. He continues, The Three Sounds arrived fully formed and were never known to stray out of their comfort zone. He dares to say, some are dismissive of trio’s easy, laid-back, soft-bop styling.

Biography by Scott Yanow. Founder of the Three Sounds as well as a leader on his own, with a warm, bluesy approach to jazz piano that fit well with the soul-jazz scene. Live at the 'It Club', Vol. Blue Note.
