Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet is an album by Miles Davis, recorded in 1956 but not released until 1961 as PRLP 7200. Two sessions on May 11, 1956 and October 26 in the same year resulted in four albums: this one, Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet, Workin' with The Miles Davis Quintet and Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet. Prestige – LP 7200: Miles Davis – trumpet. John Coltrane – tenor saxophone (except 3 and 6). Red Garland – piano. Paul Chambers – bass. Philly Joe Jones – drums.
These four truly classic records by the first version of the Miles Davis Quintet feature the trumpeter in the company of saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Relaxin' (Prestige 7129) is one of the two albums here whose tracks were compiled from an earlier, May 11 session as well as the October date. If I Were a Bell," "Oleo," and "It Could Happen to You" shine despite an excellent showing throughout.
Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet is an album recorded in 1956 by Miles Davis. Two sessions on 11 May 1956 and 26 October in the same year resulted in four albums-this one, Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet, Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet and Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet. These four albums are considered to be among the best performances in the whole hard bop subgenre. The album was remastered by Rudy Van Gelder in 2005 for Prestige Records. The trick was, instead of coming up with new material, the band simply relied on their live set in the studio.

These four albums have received a wonderful face lift and never sounded better. This is towards the end of one era and rigjt before the next one for Miles, Miles was always ahead of the others taking jazz into the new era.
