The first Hip Hop song I had ever listened to and enjoyed was from Snoop and Dr. Dre, and ever since then I was hooked. Through the years, many great rappers have come and go, but the West Coast has always had a representative to hold it down for them. The first Eazy E solo album was vital for the whole NWA movement. Eazy wasn’t the best rapper of course, and his rhymes were all written for him, but he really managed to bring some West Coast flavor with his debut solo album. He would bring the fire on songs like Ruthless Villain and of course the iconic Boyz N Da Hood, and what Eazy lacked in pure rap skill and ability, he made up for it in aggression and style. Kurupt and Daz are two of the best artists to come out the West (Kurupt by way of Philly), and together they would release a classic that still sounds dope today.

This is what Hip Hop is supposed to sound like. A flawless album: top notch production from Showbiz (and Diamond D) and guest appearances from Lord Finesse and Big L (among others) – this may just be the best DITC album in a series of excellent albums. Amazingly consistent and entertaining throughout. Also one of the best produced albums of 1992. MC Eiht’s signature style and lyricism complement the beats perfectly. It never achieved the same legendary status that the seminal release of the year – Dr Dre’s The Chronic – reached, but is one of the best West Coast ‘gangsta rap’ albums of the era, and perhaps all-time, nevertheless. Straight West Coast gangsta rap, Spice 1 does it better than most. What makes this album better than most of the generic gangsta rap albums of the era is the quality bass-heavy production and Spice 1’s skills as a rapper, his style is versatile and tight.

Hip-Hop The Best West Coast Underground Hip-Hop You Haven't Heard. A hip-hop group composed of Awol One, Circus, Akuma, Liferexall, Existereo, Radioinactive, Die Young, and DJ LA Jae, with appearances by 2Mex, The Shapeshifters is by far one of the greatest hip-hop groups to come from LA. If you haven't heard them by now, it's not too late. Do it, and you can thank me later. Who's got presence on the microphone? Shapeshifters got presence on the microphone.

Nobody on the compilation is a particularly gifted rapper, nor is the music original or even interesting (it occasionally is terrible, as a matter of fact), but West Coast Bad Boyz, Vol. 1, along with its successor, illustrates what some hip-hoppers mean by "keeping it real" - . keep turning out the same hardcore rap, without any musical
