Although the Fugees' previous album Blunted on Reality proved to be critically and commercially unsuccessful, Chris Schwartz, head of Ruffhouse Records, decided to give the group another chance. Although most tracks are built on sampled melodies, live instrumentation and DJing are incorporated into multiple tracks. Wyclef Jean plays the guitar on "Family Business", while DJ Scribble scratches on "Manifest/Outro". Nevertheless, samples are the predominant production tool on The Score. Fu-Gee-La" incorporates a sample of Teena Marie's "Ooh La La La", and is interpolated in the song's chorus.
Fugees Blunted On Reality. Sick debut album from a very talented group. More hardcore than their seminal record The Score, but definitely a must-listen. dzhondo November 12th 17. great. Wolfe July 18th 17. tellah June 30th 17. excellent. Stereochrome1 May 19th 17. good.
Issued in 2004, this is a straightforward combination of the two proper studio albums by the Fugees: the mediocre Blunted on Reality (1994), which showed little promise of what was to come, and the spectacular The Score (1996). Seven years after this was released, a similar package that added the remix EP Bootleg Versions hit the market. Completists should go for that set instead of this one, but know that neither Blunted nor Bootleg comes close to touching The Score. Track Listing - Disc 1. Title/Composer. Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Teena Marie, Allen McGrier, Prakazrel Michel, Salaam Remi.
