John Cage founded the law firm Cage & Fish along with his best friend Richard Fish (played by Greg Germann). John is initially a shy and reclusive person who isn't seen around the office much. However, when Richard hires new associate Ally McBeal, the two become friends and John slowly becomes a more easy-going, social person. John first meets Ally when she has to defend him in court for hiring a prostitute. After this, the two forge a close personal relationship with Ally often turning to John concerning her insecurities, relationships, and more often than not her hallucinations.
Richard Bunger Evans, also known as Richard Bunger, (born 1942) is an American composer and pianist who worked with John Cage and subsequently wrote "the classic book on John Cage," The Well-Prepared Piano. Evans has composed and performed music for opera and musical theatre, piano, art songs, prepared piano, choral music, string orchestra and chamber music. Evans continues to compose and perform in these various genres, and is highly respected as an accompanist to singers.
Bunger plays music of John Cage, Henry Cowell, Harold Budd, and E. T. Paull live in the studio, and we hear other pieces from recordings, including The Perilous Night by John Cage, Prelude No. 4 for Piano and Tape by Morton Subotnick, and Chorale for Quarter Tone Piano by Charles Ives. Bunger gives a very complete demonstration on how to prepare the piano for a performance of A Valentine Out of Season by John Cage, and then performs the entire piece.
John Cage transformed the landscape of 20th century music. This autumn BBC Radio 3 will pay tribute to the man who is well known for having written a silent piece (4’33’’); for making music by playing a cactus; placing nuts, bolts, screws and rubbers into a piano and writing pieces which do not require traditional instruments. In this humorous programme, Rainer composes his own piece for the prepared piano using a manual written by Richard Bunger Evans, a close associate of Cage. Roger Wright, Controller of BBC Radio 3 and Director of the BBC Proms says: John Cage’s contribution to the world of arts, music and culture continues to show no bounds.
